As Hurricane Irma approached, Jahnay Smith, 8, and her family of 15 were sheltered in West Park, Florida. The house that they were staying in had shutters that were fitted for storm protection, as reported by Mirror.
Jahnay knew that something was wrong when she woke up to the smell of smoke. In an interview with Local 10 News she said “[m]e and my mom were sleeping during the day and then I smelled fire so I jumped out of my bed and my mom woke up too.”
“I smelled smoke but she thought it was a light so she told me to go over there and look by the window and then there was fire” she added.
That is when she and her mom sprang into action to alert the rest of the family, telling them to evacuate immediately.
Jahnay, who broke down in tears during her interview, recalled the moment when she saw her entire home being destroyed by the fire.
“I had to push my dad because he is a little slow and he has a sore leg. The glass started breaking down and it came closer but we got out just in time” she told reporter Erica Rakow.
The cause of the fire is being investigated and no one was injured.
