Matthew A. Cherry is a former NFL player turned filmmaker that retired in 2007 to pursue a career in entertainment.
His current project, Hair Love, celebrates black fatherhood and natural hair.
As noted on the official Kickstarter page, the 5 minute animated film “centers around the relationship between an African-American father, Stephen, his daughter, Zuri and her hair.”
“Despite having long locks, Stephen has been used to his wife doing his daughter’s hair, so when she is unavailable right before a big event, Stephen will have to figure it out on his own. This sounds simple enough, but we soon come to find that Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own.”
Cherry says that seeing viral videos of black men interacting with their children inspired the project, especially the ones showing black dads attempting to do their daughters hair for the first time.
“We’re trying to promote hair positivity and [inspire] young kids to take pride in their natural hair” he said in the promotional video.
