Maria Borges made history in 2015 when she rocked her short and natural cut at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show — as the first woman ever to do so.
This sparked discussions across social media platforms about why it took so long for natural afro-textured hairstyles to take center stage.
Borges told ELLE: “I chopped my hair…in order to restart from the beginning and take care of it so that it grows naturally healthy. I had a great fashion season in September so I told my agent that I would really like to walk the 2015 Victoria’s Secret fashion show whilst rocking my short Afro hair.”
When asked about how she felt walking on stage, she said that it “felt amazing!” “The excitement that comes with walking a Victoria’s Secret show is simply unique, so walking out my third show wearing my TWA was one the sexiest moments of my career so far!” she added.
This year, three black models, including Borges are proudly rocking their natural hair.
Herieth Paul posted a photo on Instagram while backstage with Maria Borges and Jourdana Phillips. She captioned the photo: “Our singing group is called the #buzzcutAngels #vsfashionshow #vsfs2016 #melanin.”
The models are stunning! This is a positive step in the right direction.
